Following loads of new features which came to the Xbox One console in 2016, the Xbox team have this week introduced several exciting changes which are coming to the console in the not too distant future.
For now, they're being tested by "a small subset of gamers", with the rest of the Xbox Insider Program receiving these features in the coming weeks for testing ahead of a full roll-out in the spring.
"For gamers, the Creators Update is about performance, people, competition and streaming – getting you to the things you care about most as quickly as possible," explains Scott Henson, Xbox Partner Group Program Manager
"Today, that will mean a faster Xbox One experience than ever before, connecting you with the applications, games and of course, friends, that you enjoy most."
Take a quick look at the new features in the gallery below, or have a watch of the above video.
Below you'll find a more detailed overview from the Xbox team.

An updated look at Home:

One of the first things you’ll notice is a new look for Home.
Through the Insider program, we’ve received feedback from Xbox One gamers that the UI can be complex and for certain tasks, can require too many button presses.

Our goal is to simplify the UI and increase overall system performance, and that starts with updating Home based on what you care most about for the games you play.
To do that, we’ve optimised for speed and are surfacing to you the most valuable content for your games.
You’ll notice the main tile for what you’re currently playing has changed.
Now, you’ll see a smaller icon for the game and a few options to dive deeper into the Game Hub, interact with your Club or LFG for that game, view your Achievements and more. The updated Home also celebrates the game you’re currently playing with hero art in the background when you’re not using a custom background.

XBOX UPDATE: The Microsoft team have some fantastic new features lined up for the console

Faster and more intuitive Guide:

The next thing you’re likely to notice is that Guide has been updated. With one press of the Xbox button on your controller, you can pull up the newly enhanced Guide as an overlay on the left side of your screen, no matter what you’re doing.

With the Guide, we’ve added new features and functionality.

You’ll notice that there’s a new start page. This page is designed to get you to the content you care about most, including your games and apps, Home, Store, your recently played games and apps and your top Pins.
It also features quick access to your media controls when playing background music.

A new way to multitask:

In addition to adding a new start page to Guide, we’re also evolving our multitasking system.
To simplify discoverability and to make it much quicker to get to the things you care about most, our multitasking features will also be designed to work well with the new Guide.
In addition to quick access to music, screen shots and GameDVR will be one button press away.
You can bring up Guide and press “X” or “Y” on your controller to record your favourite gaming moments.
We’ve also added a new achievement tracker which allows you to track your favourite achievements and play at the same time.
The new Guide is also where you will be able to broadcast instantly to Beam when we roll that out to Insiders in the next couple of weeks.

Cortana gaming enhancements:

There are a series of new Cortana updates to make your Xbox One smarter. In this update, you can set reminders and alarms so you don’t miss gaming sessions. In the coming weeks, we will be releasing more Cortana updates to enhance your gaming experience even more as well as continued performance and reliability updates.

Improving system updates:

Our goal with system updates is that you never have to worry about them again and to make it clearer when a system update is available. To enable this we are updating the interface so the steps are easy to understand. We’re also going to enable every Xbox One owner to keep their console, games and apps up to date independent of which power mode they have chosen.

The list below shows the current Xbox One operating system version number and what features were added or updated based on system updates from mid-2015 to the present.
To find your Xbox One console’s operating system version:
  1. Scroll left from Home to open the guide.

  3. Select All Settings.

The operating system version is listed as Build and is the second line down.

Download Performance
We’ve made several optimizations to game and app downloads on Xbox One:
  • Customers with high-speed connections (greater than 100Mbps) should experience up to 80% faster download speeds.
  • Customers with connections less than 100Mbps should experience more consistent performance that is up to 40% faster than before.
  • Additional optimizations have also made background downloads more resilient to intermittent connectivity issues.
Download speeds will be influenced by network contention within the home and at the ISP level. Download speeds will also be impacted when games are running on the console as system resources are prioritized for gameplay over background downloads. For more information, visit Troubleshoot slow game or app downloads on Xbox One.

New or updated features
Cortana available in the U.S. and UK
  • Talk to Cortana on your Xbox One with your headset or Kinect. To start, just say "Hey Cortana" or launch the Cortana app. If you're not sure what to say, try "Hey Cortana, what can I say?"
  • If you're using Kinect, turn on your console by saying, "Hey Cortana, Xbox on."
Background music
  • Music apps will now be able to play music in the background. In an app that supports background music, just start some music. You'll be able to switch to other apps and games while the music plays.
  • After starting your music: To play, pause, skip, and adjust music volume from anywhere, double-tap the Xbox button to open the guide, choose Multitasking, then select your music controls.
  • The app must support background music. An updated Pandora app in the U.S. is the first app to support background music—and more are coming soon.
My games & apps
  • Your stuff is closer. From Home, move right and select My games & apps.
  • In My games & apps, there are new sorting options.
  • "Ready to Install" has its own area, so you can quickly find the games and apps you've purchased but haven't installed.
  • Game and app updates will show up in their own area, when available.
  • The queue area now tells you what's been recently installed in addition to what's in your queue.

Top PC games on Xbox Live
  • Top PC games now have game hubs on Xbox Live. Whether you're on PC, Xbox, or mobile, you'll see what PC games your friends are playing, share PC game clips and screenshots, and message friends on Xbox Live. On Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, you can join a party chat with your friends no matter what they're doing.

  • Preorders now get charged closer to game launch instead of at time of purchase.
  • Customers in the U.S., Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Germany, and Finland can now use mobile operator billing to make purchases. Customers in China can now use China Union Pay.
Find Facebook friends
  • Find friends from Facebook by linking your Facebook and Xbox Live accounts. In the guide, go to the Friends tab, then choose Friends > Suggestions. Select Find Facebook friends and follow the steps. Your Facebook friends that have done the same will start showing up in your suggestions.
